COMPANY of HEROES 3’S CAMPAIGNAGES HAS A “REALLY TIGHT CONNECTION” BETWEEN STRATEGIC LAYERS AND TACTICAL LAYERS
Relic Entertainment and Publisher Sega shared additional details about Company of Heroes 3’s dynamic Campaign Map. This includes the roles of the navy and airforce and how asymmetrical elements such as Partisans will affect the conflict between the Allies and the Axis.
Fan feedback and the solicitation of help led to the developer’s decision not to continue with a mission-based linear structure.
Company of Heroes 3 will expand upon the concept. Executive Producer David Littman said that the connection between the strategic campaign map, and the RTS battles, is the real secret sauce. “
The company of Heroes 3’s campaign requires players to pay more attention to logistics. You will need to track where your troops are and ensure they have the support needed to land on enemy beaches.
Fighters and bombers require airfields that they can land on, so you may need to push inland with your ground troops or secure enemy airbases.
Your navy can defend and bombard enemy positions and transport ground troops to attack or flank enemy posts from beaches.
You will have to deal with the enemy’s airforce and navy. The German approach was very different, so air and navy will differ. “Campaign Map Lead Andrew Deneault explains.
“At the time we started the campaign, German airpower began to weaken […] The Germans will use their airpower against the player’s ports, against player’s supply lines and against the players naval power in the area. “
During the campaign, players have another strategic resource: partisans. They can perform certain actions with a fraction of the resources required by regular troops.
They can also sneak behind enemy lines without needing a supply or reconnaissance line. Once they are there, they can sabotage enemy positions and delay or confuse enemy troops.
The consequences of these battles can be felt afterward, just as the campaign map assets will determine the outcome of RTS battles.
Littman points out that losing half your squads could result in your army having fewer veteran soldiers to fight future battles.
Company of Heroes 3 will launch on PC in 2022. This is the first entry of the series that follows the Allied campaign against Italy.
