The servers currently are down as Krafton switches PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds over to a free-to-play version. The patch notes for the 15.2 version are now available. This is undoubtedly the most significant release in the game’s history, and we will be looking at some highlights and what to expect when the servers come back up.

Highlights from PUBG 15.2 Patch notes

The arrival of tactical items is a major addition to the game – tactical gear gives players something to think about other than gunplay.

Interestingly, tactical gear will take up one of the primary weapon slots, encouraging a new way to play. Let’s take a look at the new gear that we can expect.

PUBG Drone

The Drone is Tactical Gear that allows players to scout faraway areas safely and pick up items without the need to risk direct combat.

  • Drones will populate every map.
  • Drones will also be available in Normal Matches and Custom Games and Training Mode, and Sandbox Mode.
  • After players have looted and equipped the drone, they will hold the Drone tablet in their hands.
  • Drone View can be toggled in and out by players.
    • Once players switch into Drone View, the Drone will take off into the air.
    • Drones in flight make noise and flash a distinct blinking light.
    • A deployed drone will be identified by a unique icon on the minimap and map.
    • Drone View allows players to see the Drone from the perspective of Drone View.
    • Players can toggle out of Drone View, and the Drone will still hover in its current position.
  • Players can recall Drones in flight.
    • The Drone will fly straight back to the spot where the recall was initiated when a recall is initiated.
    • The Drone will return to the spot where the player first remembered it.
    • If the recall is ongoing, the recall will be stopped if the player tries to use the Drone Tablet.
    • If the recall process is still in progress, the player can stop the recall if they use the recall feature again.
    • While being recalled, the drone cannot avoid obstacles or manoeuvre through solid objects.
  • Players must remain within a 300m radius of the Drone while they fly it.
    • When the Drone is within 90m of its maximum operating radius, it alerts players by flashing a warning message and displaying a static screen.
    • Players will have to retrieve the Drone and fix it up if it leaves the Drone’s operation area.
    • The Drone will be destroyed if its HP drops below 0. The Drone must be retrieved by players and repaired to make it usable again.
  • A drone can take one item from its inventory.
    • A stack of five bandages (5, for example) is also considered one item.
    • Drones cannot pick up items in Care Packages, Deathboxes, or Trunks.
    • Drone View players can also drop their held items at any time.
    • Players can recall the Drone’s item to receive the Drone’s hold item.
  • Players will be able to ping as normal while toggled in Drone view.
    • The ping icon will appear as a regular ping.
