- RimWorld is a narrative generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant tales about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation, and survival. It operates by controlling the”random” events the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and travel salesperson is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are lots of storytellers to pick from. Randy Random does insane stuff, Cassandra.
- Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax.
Your colonists are not professional settlers — they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You will get more colonists by catching them in combat, turning them to your side, buying them out of slave dealers, or simply taking in refugees. So your colony will stay a motley crew.
Each individual’s background is monitored and impacts how they play. A nobleman will be good at social skills (recruiting offenders, negotiating trade prices) but refuse to perform physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food in the long run but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is excellent at research but can’t do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill — but he does this nicely.
Colonists grow — and ruin — relationships. Each has a notion of others, which decides whether they’ll become fans, marry, cheat, or struggle. Maybe your two greatest colonists are married — until one of them falls for the dashing surgeon who saved from a gunshot wound.
The game creates a whole world from pole to equator. You choose whether to property your crash pods in a chilly northern tundra, a parched desert flat, a temperate woods, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different regions have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral sources, and even terrain. These challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are extremely different from people in a parched desert wasteland or even a tundra using a two-month growing season.
Travel Throughout Earth. You are not stuck in one area. You can form a caravan of individuals, animals, and offenders. Rescue kidnapped former allies from pirate outposts, attend peace talks, commerce with different factions, attack enemy colonies, and complete other quests. You can even package up your entire colony and proceed to a new location. You can use the rocket-powered transportation pods to travel quicker.
You can train and tame animals. Lovable pets will cheer up unhappy colonists. Farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared. Attack beasts could be published upon your enemies. Many animals — cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.
Men and women in RimWorld always notice their situation and environment to choose how to feel at any given moment. They react to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded, being abandoned in darkness, getting packed into cramped environments, sleeping outdoors or in precisely the same area as a person, and many other situations. If they are too stressed, they may lash out or break down.
Wounds, diseases, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on each body area and affect the characters’ capacities. Eye injuries make it difficult to shoot or do surgery. Wounded legs slow people down. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, feet, and more can be hurt, diseased, or overlooked, and most importantly, have logical in-game consequences. Other species possess their own body layouts — take a deer’s leg, and it could still hobble on the other three. Take a rhino’s horn, and it’s not as dangerous.
You can fix body parts using prosthetics, which range from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will get Joe Colonist walking after an unfortunate incident with a rhinoceros, but he’ll still be rather slow. Purchase a costly bionic leg out of a trader next year, and Joe becomes a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, purchase, and transplant internal organs.
