WHY YOU SEE THE SUN ON JANUARY 1ST IN ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS

January 1st is the first day in a new year. This day is special for some, however, as it occurs in Animal Crossing : New Horizons. This is the only day you can actually see the sun on-screen in the game. The sun will still be shining on the world for the remainder of the year but it won’t be visible on-screen.

How can you see the sun in New Horizons January 1st? This rare sight is available to you for 24 hours. You can see the sun at dawn and dusk. The sun will appear between the ocean and the screen’s top edge for approximately two hours each time.

It doesn’t matter which hemisphere your island’s based in, north, or south; you will experience it wherever you are. However, the hemisphere can affect when you see the sun. It’s winter in the north and summer in the south. The time between dawn and sunset is affected by the seasons. The daylight hours are longer in summer, and shorter in winter.

The sun is not visible on January 1st.

These are the times when you can expect the sun to shine brightly. These are the official sunrise/sunset times. However, the first and last appearances by the sun are explicitly mentioned.

NORTHHEMISPHERE

Sunrise: 6am – 8.10am (Sun doesn’t appear over horizon until 7.15am)

Sunset: 3.50pm to 6pm (Sun sets below the horizon at 5.30pm).

SOUTH EMISPHERE

Sunrise: 4am – 6.10am (Sun doesn’t appear over horizon until 5.15am)

Sunset: 5.50pm-8pm (Sun sets below the horizon at 7.30pm).

This gives you two hours and ten seconds for each period, enough time to see the sun on your island every day.

The event is based in Japan and Korea on the New Year’s Tradition.

This event is happening in Animal Crossing – New Horizons. It has a real-life source. Hatsuhinode is a Japanese tradition that means “first sunrise of each year”. This tradition requires that you wake up on New Year’s Day at dawn to see the first sunrise. Participants are said to be blessed with good fortune. This tradition is also observed Korea.

While the tradition mentions the sunrise specifically, Animal Crossing includes the sunset in its unique event. You might notice the sun shining brighter if you play New Horizons during dawn or dusk. You now know the reason. It only lasts for a day. You can still see the sunset even if you miss the sunrise. You can still witness the wonder if you are unable to make it. It is a unique way to begin the new year.
