Vassal Management is the most crucial aspect of CK3. It is also the reason for most of your problems and spending most of your time. As with all characters in the game, Vassals have their own goals and personalities, which may conflict with yours.

This guide will cover the basics of Vassal management and what you can do to keep your Realm stable. You have many options, and not one solution will work for every situation. Crusader King offers a wide range of tools to help you.

CK3 Vassals

The basic definition is aThe basic definition is aThe basic definition is a Vassal or a landed ruler who swears allegiance to one character. It is possible to have Vassals as your servants, but you can also be a Vassal to another player. You can also be a Vassal and a Liege at the exact moment.

Your Vassals will also be subject to this obligation since Duchies will serve as the Liege to the Counties beneath them, at least until they take all the Titles. All Vassals are required to pay taxes and levies to their Liege. The amounts depend on the Laws and contributions.

CK3 Vassal Limits

Essentially it comes down to delegation, with you granting characters power over others while you have control over them. The larger you get as a ruler, the more this becomes a requirement as each ruler has a Vassal Limit depending on their rank. This number only includes Count level Titles or higher, so Cities and Temples inside your Domain don’t count towards it. Going over your Limit can stack penalties to Taxes and Levies by 5% per extra Vassal.

    • County Can only have Domain Vassals
    • Duchy 20
    • Kingdom 40
    • Empire 60

The Duchy Limit for Kings and above is 2. They are subject to a -15 opinion penalty by their Vassals if they exceed the Limit. A Duchy may have as many Duchies they wish without any punishment from the County Vassals. It is possible to stay as a Duchy up until you have approximately 25 counties under your control. That’s 20 Vassals plus whatever the Domain Limit is. This could make it a viable strategy for you before you become too big.

CK3 Vassal Ranks

Vassals can be of any size based on their Title ranks and are expected to serve their De Jure Liege. A County may want to see a De Jure Title, and a Duchy will want to see their De Jure Kingdom, while a Kingdom would like to be part of the enormous Empire. There is an exception to the rule. Duchies will serve an Empire directly without an intermediary Kingdom.

However, you as a player do have the right to manage things in this manner. While it is true that they may not consider you their Rightful Liege to their Direct Vassal, there are arguments for keeping them down.

One, the penalty for holding the De Jure higher title is reduced and iisn’tthat severe – this means a Kingdom can have a County within its De Jure borders with no significant problems.

Duchies are often the greatest threat to your power, as you learn very early. Duchies have greater military power than Counties and are more likely to push for changes within their RRealm Because they have less energy, it takes them less to move against you and send a request to start a civil war.

However, to keep your LLimitunder under control, yyou’llneed to consolidate Vassals into Duchy Titles as your numbers grow. This is not a problem, and Duchies can be managed with good management – until the perfect storm of hate and greed explodes everything.
