5D Chess starts each game using a standard chess set-up. Following specific rules, players can move pieces onto an older version of the board as the game proceeds.
Time travel is not possible in 5D Chess because it would change the past. Instead, the alternate timeline, or parallel universe, that time travel creates has the exact same starting position as in the original timeline, but the piece of time traveling is added. The pieces can be moved between the different ” time-lines ” and can, in doing so, move to ” present”, ” past” or ” future”.
Each player must make an action on every active timeline. If there are three separate timelines active, then each turn is made up of three moves.
The timelines created by a player are all active, except for those that were created successively. If he creates more than one timeline before his opponent, then the timelines created sequentially become inactive.
If the second condition is satisfied but the player’s king has not been checked, then the game will end in a stalemate. The more moves that have passed, the more complex the game is due to new timelines.
As with the ranks and files, time and timelines are used as axes for movement. A rook, for example, can be moved any number of spaces on one axis.
This allows a player to send the piece into the current position but in any previous turn, by using the time axis. The bishops can move in any direction along two axes. For example, a player could move the rook three squares up and then three turns backward.
The Knight moves two squares on one axis, and another on the other axis. For example, a one-time knight can move into any space adjacent to a time period that’s two times away. King can move one space on any number of axes. A king can, for example, simultaneously move one space horizontally.
