Half-Life (stylized as HLF-LIFE) is the first-person shooter game created by Valve and released through Sierra Studios for Microsoft Windows in 1998. Half-Life employed scripted sequences like the scene of a Vortigaunt smashing the door to reveal key plot points.
In contrast to the majority of first-person shooters at the time using cuts-scene intermissions to describe their plots, Half-Life’s story is mostly told by way of scripted scenes (bar one cutscene) which keeps players in charge through the first-person perspective. This means that players never lose control of Gordon who is a character who does not speak and is not even seen during the game. The player can see “through his eyes” for all of the game.
Half-Life doesn’t have “levels”; it instead breaks the game down into chapters whose names appear on the screen while you play the game. The gameplay is uninterrupted, with only small pauses during loading.
