Metroid Prime Trilogy Lead Tech Engineer Jack Mathews recently spoke to Kiwi Talkz. A former Retro Studios employee spoke about Metroid Prime4‘s long development cycle and the Nintendo prototype strategy. They then discussed the differences in working for a Japanese publisher and a western one. He believes that Japanese publishers are more open to taking risks than western counterparts.

Mathews claims that this is a very common approach in Japan. These business deals in Japan are less formal than those in the west. Moreover, western publishers tend to be less trusting of developers. Why?

He says that developers are often afraid of their prototype being taken to another publisher. Japanese companies such as Nintendo will likely take greater risks with prototypes before agreeing on full development terms. Mathews also spoke about the motivation behind the Nintendo prototype strategy.

Metroid Prime 4 was first announced in 2017. However, Metroid Dread was dropped by Nintendo this year to keep fans over ( read our review). Although the wait is long, the next 3D Metroid video game will be worth it. Long waits are not uncommon for fans of the series.
