PlayStation fans are divided as a long-requested feature finally arrives behind the hefty paywall.

PlayStation gamers took to social media to vent their frustration that Sony finally introduced backwards compatible on PS4/PS5, but it was locked behind a paywall.

Sony has announced the long-rumoured PlayStation Plus overhaul. It is a complete retooling and reorganization of the service, including multiple tiers that offer their own benefits.

The all-new PS Plus consists of three tiers: Essential, Extra (PS11), and Premium (PS13.49).

Essential is basically PS Plus as we know it. It offers monthly games free of charge, discounts and online play. The Extra tier includes all the benefits of the regular tier and “up to 400” of the best PS4 and PS5 gaming experiences. These games are a mixture of first and second-party games that can be downloaded.

Premium is the last tier, and it’s probably the most exciting. In addition to the above benefits, Premium offers premium customers free trials and the long-awaited opportunity to play original PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games via Cloud streaming and downloading.

This news didn’t go down well with many fans, who felt it was not fair of Sony to lock a feature they have been asking for for years behind an expensive paywall. The Premium Tier costs PS13.49 per month or PS100 for the entire year.

Although this doesn’t offer proper backwards combinability as Xbox does, it’s evident that users feel a little let down by the fact that Sony was far from the mark while so close. Let’s hope that the games library offered helps to ease this pain.
