Super Mario RPG Director Wants His Last Game to Be “Another Mario RPG.”

Chihiro Fujioka, the game director for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, is interested in creating a new RPG with the plumber from Italy. Fujioka, who has been working on the Mario & Luigi series, wants to create a new RPG featuring Nintendo’s icon.

Fujioka spoke with YouTube channel MinnMax (thanks Wii) and was asked about Super Mario RPG. The director admitted that he would like to create another RPG. Although he did not specifically say that this would be a sequel to Super Mario RPG, he stated that he wanted players to control Mario and leave Luigi.

Super Mario RPG is still loved by fans. Geno was frequently requested to play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo appears to be moving Mario away from RPGs with paper Mario: The Origami King nearly has no RPG mechanics other than its turn-based battle system.

Super Mario RPG is available for the Wii U Virtual Console and the SNES Classic. Paper Mario is another RPG entry from the N64 that can be played on Nintendo Switch with the Online + Expansion Pack.
